French Beaded Flowers - A Short History
The art of making French beaded flowers - designed using seed beads on wire - originated in the 16th century.  Peasants in France, engaged by the nobility to embroider clothing with small glass beads, saved the imperfect or unusable beads which they used to create flowers to be placed on church alters or in bridal bouquets.  Flower beading caught on and was popular during the 17th & 18th centuries in France, Italy and England.  In Victorian times, designs for beaded flowers were found in ladies' magazines.  Intricate beaded bouquets and decorator pieces were owned, mainly by the elite.  As fashions changed and beaded clothing became less popular, the interest in beaded flowers faded.   Currently a revival in this art is taking place.
