| The
Seven Gods of Fortune commonly referred to in English as the Seven Lucky Gods, are the
seven gods of good fortune in the Shinto religion, Japanese mythology, and folklore.
Each god has a traditional attribute. Jurojin (Gama) is the god of longevity,
Ebisu, god of fishers or merchants, Daikokuten (Daikoku), is god of wealth, commerce and
trade. Ebisu and Daikoku are often paired and represented as carvings or masks on the
walls of small retail shops. Benzaiten (Benten-sama) is the goddess of knowledge, art and
beauty, especially music. Bishamonten is god of warriors, Fukurokuju, god of happiness,
wealth and longevity. Hotei is the fat and happy god of abundance and good health. The buttons are porcelain, about 1/2 inch in size, painted black on the back with a Japanese maker's mark stamped on it. They are about 70 years old. Each of the five gods represented -- Fukurokujin, Ebisu, Benten, Daikoku and Bishamon is mounted on a small cardboard square with the god's name typed on it. |
